Aaron Lee Tasjan Covers Neal Casal’s ‘Traveling After Dark’
The track appears on the upcoming Neal Casal all-star tribute album, ‘Highway Butterfly.’
Aaron Lee Tasjan covered Neal Casal’s “Traveling After Dark.” The track was recorded for the upcoming tribute album, Highway Butterfly: The Songs Of Neal Casal, which will be released on November 12 via The Neal Casal Music Foundation and Royal Potato Family.
Proceeds from the all-star compilation will benefit the Neal Casal Music Foundation non-profit organization, which supplies musical instruments and lessons in New Jersey and New York state schools where Casal was raised. Additional proceeds will go to mental health organizations that support musicians, MusiCares and Backline.Care.
Casal died by suicide at age 50 in August 2019. Casal’s career in music included membership in CATS, as well as Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Beachwood Sparks, GospelbeacH and Hard Working Americans, along with many other projects and collaborations. Additionally, 14 solo Casal albums were also released.
Highway Butterfly: The Songs Of Neal Casal was co-produced by Casal’s frequent collaborators Jim Scott and Widespread Panic/Hard Working Americans bassist Dave Schools. Casal’s friend and longtime manager, Gary Waldman, was also part of bringing together the 130 participating musicians who collectively covered 41 of Casal’s original songs.
In addition to Tasjan, among those contributing to the compilation were Bob Weir, Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band, Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks, Billy Strings, Hiss Golden Messenger, Fruit Bats, Steve Earle & The Dukes, Jonathan Wilson, Shooter Jennings, Leslie Mendelson, Vetiver, Beachwood Sparks, Jaime Wyatt, Marcus King, J Mascis, Dori Freeman, Warren Haynes, Cass McCombs, Kenny Roby, Norah Jones’ Puss N Boots and Tim Heidecker, along with several others.
“This is the right cast of characters to make these songs sparkle the way they deserve,” Tasjan stated. “Neal was such a great writer and there is so much humanity in his songs.”
“Traveling After Dark” was originally released on Casal’s 2006 solo record No Wish to Reminisce. Below, watch Tasjan perform with Casal’s Circles Around the Sun band mates Tony Leone and Adam MacDougall, as well as Schools, Scott and Jesse Aycock, Jon Graboff and Alex Koford:
