Dark Star Orchestra Recreates Jerry Garcia Band Show

Ever since forming over 17 years and 2,200 shows ago Dark Star Orchestra has focused on either recreating Grateful Dead shows or performing setlists they create based mostly around material from the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire. Friday saw a big switch for the tribute act as they based their show on a setlist the Jerry Garcia Band performed for the first of three consecutive nights.

Dark Star Orchestra’s first of two nights at Jay Peak Resort Amphitheatre in Jay, Vermont featured the same setlist the JGB used on November 16, 1991 at the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York. Drummer Dino English sat out until the last number, a filler of “Deal,” leaving Rob Koritz as the lone drummer for the vast majority of the evening. Gutiarist Rob Eaton, attending his son’s wedding, sat out as well.

Just as the JGB did in Albany, DSO played a bevy of covers in Vermont including The Rolling Stones’ “Let’s Spend The Night Together,” Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally,” Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me” and “Tangled Up In Blue” by Bob Dylan. Dark Star Orchestra continues a run of three special JGB shows back in Jay tonight.
