Trey Anastasio Talks Phish with Rolling Stone

Trey at Jammys
By R. Snyder
Trey Anastasio sat down with Rolling Stone last week, and while he didn't say Phish was getting back together, he did hint at it.

Trey told RS's Brian Hiatt: "When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I'm not gonna go around playing 'You Enjoy Myself' for the rest of my life. And it's so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it's not that I can't believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail."

Trey recently received a reduced sentence of three years' probation for possessing painkillers without a prescription; more info on Trey's sentencing can be found here. Trey currently has one show scheduled for the summer on August, 2 at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI where he will perform solo acoustic.

So go fine JamBase users, go and set the comment board ablaze! And you might as well listen to the epic "Y.E.M." (below) with Santana from Stowe, VT in 1992 while you do it...

Now, I'm not the biggest Phish fan in the world. I did see 35 shows between 1992 and 1995, but lost interest after Jerry died and the Phish scene blew up. I saw them 10 more times between 1995 and the end. However, this surely looks like the makings of a comeback, at least in the embryonic stages. I would definitely see them if they got back together...It's just a shame that they're not allowed to play at Red Rocks, the greatest venue on the planet.

Anyone remember after the "hiatus" at a show in Hampton VA how Trey got pissed and started YEM over after the first few bars because he said that they had been practicing that song so much and he wanted to play it right? He sure seems to have a love/hate relationship with that song. I on the other hand love it unconditionally. I'll see you heads in the lawn Page side in 2010!

Already left this one on another thread, but here goes: whatever comes of this is cool, but let it be Trey's decision. He doesn't owe us anything. Seeing how things turned out in August of '95, if you could've maybe taken some of the pressure off Jerry by saying, "You don't have to tour for our sakes - we love you and we want to to be healthy and with us a long time", would you have done it? Yeah? Well ... maybe the same goes for Trey. These folks don't live just to please all of us- and they don't make changes in their lifestyles to hurt us ... don't hate them for stepping off the ride if they need to. If it's fun, play - play your heart out, Trey. But this time, do it for you, buddy.

Bryan24,a01---it is because in 1996 someone got hit by a car....a phish fan....in Morrison. Phish, took the heat, and were banned. Great show though.

Phish got banned at Red Rocks also because of numerous incidents of ticketless hordes in the parking lot causing incidents with security and police, not to mention the town of Morrison. I attended the run -- along with the Allman Brothers show the night before, which was superior to any of the four Phish shows to these ears -- and this was a case where Phish just became too "big" for a venue, in this case Red Rocks.

Jail can definitely put things into perspective, so maybe Trey has finally realized that being bitter about playing the same songs with Phish was a mistake. It takes a really shitty experience, like jail, to see what truly makes you happy in life. Phish has not only made their phans happy but it fulfilled the lives of the band members as well. Although it has lead Trey to drug abuse many more people would be worse off if Phish didn't exist. I personally am VERY grateful that Phish created the music they did for as long as they did, even though I never saw them live. I would love to get the chance to see those guys on stage together, but I also understand that it may never happen. One thing that is certain is that many people like myself would welcome a reunion with open arms if they chose to do so.

Can you imagine when they finally do announce a tour.... hmmmm... $60-75 tickets at sold-out venues and thousands of kids outside in the lots...

Seriously, Phish will need to book a tour stricktly of festivals (ie the Great Went, Clifford Ball, Lemonwheel, IT, Big Cypress)... One in each time zone... Most obviously a large NYE back at Big Cypress, which has a ten year reunion quickly approaching!

REDROCKS: From what I remember, Redrocks was a mess. People would be climbing all over the place back then. Trying to sleep in the hills. It was after Jerry and the deadhead who didn't want to go home joined the phish people and it just got to big for that venue.

Just for the record...someone WAS hit by a car, which, along with many run-ins with cops were the TRUE reasons for the ban from Red Rocks. Of course they were TOO BIG for Red Rocks (you don't get banned for that) and Morrison didn't want to deal. Remember when Phish played the Fillmore in 98? That was after Vegas Halloween sold out in minutes....they were WAY "too big" for that. San Francisco knows how to deal with "those types" a 'lil better, as many know. Also, jesus christ isn't a jambase or phish fan.

The shows are not going to have to be mammoth. Last time when they came back from hiatus you had to give away tix to some of the shows. (Not the first NYE/Hampton but soon afterwards.) Most of the people who used to go on tour are grown up now with jobs and kids and probably will do a fraction of the shows they used to. And the kids nowadays seem to prefer hip-hop. I'm not saying the shows will be empty but Phish is going to be a smaller thing than it used to be.

Red Rocks was great while it lasted, but they went from playing 2 nights to 4 nights. If I recall they were the first to play more than 3 in a row. With no Grateful Dead to follow, and no adequate camping nearby, it was a recipe for disaster. For those who were there on the Tuesday night after all the shit went down the night before and there was talk of even cancelling the last 2 shows, you were treated to one of the greatest Red Rocks concert EVER. Not only did the setlist address the police situation by opening with Makisupa Policeman, the first set built to a fever pitch during Antelope while these 2 giant clouds (one white and one black) came from around each side of the rocks to meet up behind the stage. The entire ampitheatre was surrounded by low lying clouds...and then came the lightning!!! In the distance at first, then closer lighting up the clouds much like their strobe lights during the heavy smoke machine. There was so much static electricity in the air, everyone hair was LITERALLY standing on end. The crackling of energy was building as Trey scratched out the into to Tweezer and something had to give. As Phish played the Beatles "A Day in the Life" we were about to get the shock of our lives. After Page sang the first few verses, the song reaches the part where it builds and builds until it pops and then they have the line..."Woke up, got outta bed dragged a comb across my head." Only this time when they hit that one super sharp note the skyexploded and a GIANT LIGHTNING BOLT ARCED FROM ROCK TO ROCK RIGHT OVER THE CROWD! I was certain that we were all going to die, as they continued the show and torn into Big Black Furry Creatures From Mars to continue taunting the Red Rocks Gods as it started to finally rain. Fishman then came out on cue to sing Purple Rain in an attempt to appease the Gods, and luckilly it worked and our lives were mercifully spared. While the show may not look like much on paper, those who were there will nver forget, unless they are still experiencing seizures from the massive electroshock to their cerebral cortex... Get the show if you can and listen to the crowd after that moment in "A Day in the Life" and you will hear a 1 second pause followed by one of the LOUDEST roars you have ever heard.

08/06/96 (Tue) Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison, CO

Set 1: Makisupa Policeman, Rift*, Suzie Greenberg, Simple, Theme From the Bottom, Lizards, Dinner and a Movie, Horn, Run Like an Antelope

Set 2: The Curtain > Tweezer**, Prince Caspian, A Day in the Life, BBFCFM, Purple Rain, Harry Hood > Tweezer Reprise, E: Johnny B. Goode

Comment: * Contained "This is Red Rocks, This is the Edge," by Trey. ** With "Norwegian Wood" jam.

To the guy that said SCI brings hugs crowds to RR too, come on buddy?! There were more heads running around in Morrison than SCI had at their shows. Remember when SCI tried to play big amphitheaters when Phish was on their 1st hiatus? SCI & Phish, even in SCI's home state, are like comparing apples and oranges.

Also, if anybody really thinks that the boys never hit their stride after hiatus, just go listen to 4 night NYE run in Miami. It was as good a 4 night run as they've EVER had in their careers!

So do I need to get 2nd job now and start saving for this tour?

Ivan Neville said in an interview after he got off the crack that he had lost his way when the drug became more important than making music. Now, Ivan and his Dumpstaphunk will funk your brains out.

Jon Fishman seems to be playing all over and I saw Mike Gordon at JazzFest trying to get into the Blues Tent in front of me--for the music.

Trey lost his direction and the direction has been found.

I ask the rest of the band to let Trey play YEM once a show without taking his left nut.

SPEAKING THE TRUTH:

If Phish got back together, the inevitable festival would get ruined by people who go to these festivals to party ( a lot in the past few years) and not to party with the music...I despise these people and wish they would stay in their mothers basements. I am sure not many of these degenerates are on jambase, but we have all seen them...This is happening because we come home after an amazing time and tell our wonderful stories...which of course travels through the grape vine and end up at the bottom...the dirt of this earth...they ruin good time, good fun, I would like to give my left nut for these low life ugly mother f*ckers to see a Slayer, Slither, Papa Roach, or METALLICA show...then ever to see them again...

I hear ya, twalsh...maybe it's my age, but I caught over 40 shows between 1995 and 2000, and quite frankly, the crowd was going down hill then...too many rude, inconsiderate people...only there for the drugs and the scene and not the music...I was in the parking lot of a show when Mike rode by on a golf cart and someone yelled "hey trey"...his friends tried to correct him, but he didn't care...as he said, "I'm only here for the drugs"...bad time...I know one person shouldn't label an entire crowd, but there were handfuls and handfuls of people just like him...

I have great memories...and it won't be the same (just like when the Dead got too big)...too many good bands with chill crowds to put up with idiots and assholes just to say "I was there"...

I'll wait to see what happens before pump'in my stick...

To set things straight, the town of Morrison was vocally agaist the reaction of the police that night. They put the blame of that whole mess on the cops for overreacting. Shitty that it had to go down like that. Mainly cause I wanna see another Phish Red Rocks run. Never gonna happen though.

Whether Trey plays solo acoustic, or with Phish, or TAB, or Oysterhead, or GRAB, or Phil and Friends, or with some completely new project, I really don't care. All I want is to be able to experience Trey performing live music once again. It's been a rough year and a half for Trey and his fans. I'll be excited to hear Trey perform anytime, anywhere, and with anyone, but if it's with Phish even better. The most important thing is that Trey stays healthy so he'll be around for his family and his fans for many years to come.

Now this is rather encouraging. It seems the odds are in the favor of this happening. I mean really? Who hasn't gotten back together these day? Most of those people are old, some of the old memebers of the bands are dead and the hate each other and those bands still get back together. So why shouldn't some young guys who are actually friends do the same thing?

i'm 23 years old, and my only phish shows were deer creek 04 and coventry.

what can I say, I was late picking up on this shit. i was into 311 and Sublime for years and never gave phish a chance. i guess thats my fault, but i'm not upset about it anymore(i was upset about it in august 2004).

i fell in love with the music and the scene both. i never toured, so therefore I never saw the negative side of things... some of my friends have toured for years and years, and by the stories they tell, boy it seems like shit can get ugly.

if they come back, i get to take my wife and baby to their first shows, and take them on their/our first tour. thats right, i said TOUR. i need a vacation/change of scenery. whats wrong with touring anyway? i'll flip burritos, grilled cheeses and pizza breads all day long if it means i get to walk half a mile into a venue where the boys are playing that night.

run with your crew and be good. everybody that makes the scene what it is will be there, and unfortunately that includes losers that ruin the mood occaisionally. so be good. enjoy yourselves, and look out for your brothers and sisters.

looking forward to seeing all of you there.

They keep getting closer and closer just like the last haitus until they will finally announce it. As long as they all are back on and into it and focused then it will be unreal. I truly believe they can re-become what they once were at their peak in the late 1990's. Virtually every show for those stretches is great from start to finish. Not all are sick, but there were very very few "bad" or even "just ok" shows. When the focus strayed from the music, most obviously post-haitus, the number of less impressive shows grew. I think they all know that and they all would come back with the intentions of getting back to nasty jams, deep funk, and energy pumping shows they all once knew. Count me in, this could be the shit.

As for Phish no longer being able to play Red Rocks, that tragedy led to one good thing... anyone can know get into the parking lots. Through that year, you had to have a ticket just to get into the parking lots, which is why there were so many people in Morrison. That has been changed, and everyone is now allowed into the lots, ticket or no ticket. So, let's keep our fingers crossed, and if Phish decides to tour again, the venue will bring them back for a 4 night stand.

Drewski---Actually, those Phish shows at Red Rocks were VERY SOLD OUT, while SCI, other than last year had a hard time selling the venue out...I've seen SCI there everytime they've played there since 2001, and most of the shows had about 15 empty rows at the rear of the venue....They definitely did not bring the same crowds with the same enthusiasm as Phish did...And again, I'm not the biggest Phish fan, but to say that SCI brought the same crowds is an extreme overstatement.

Kirkbrew- Post hiatus for the most part was not nearly as good as pre-hiatus. I feel fortunate to have seen some awesome post-hiatus shows. Chula Vista, CA 2003...listen to DWD. Listen to the Twist from Vegas 2004 and tell me your face doesn't melt. The Miami run in '03 was sick as all hell... Even the Camden show before Coventry was pretty sick. Listen to Sneakin' Sally. Overall, I don't think post-hiatus was bad. At least most of the shows I saw. The festivals after Big Cypress were all pretty lacking though.

I'd definitely think that it would be worthwhile to catch a glimpse into what one of the most legendary bands of all time would have to offer. I would hope, though, that this time, they would have the good sense to make a declaration about what kind of atmosphere they are trying to create. While some might believe that it's a bit hypocritical for one of the "headiest" bands to make some kind of public service announcement, it would be refreshing to see a band that could vocalize their intent to do better for themselves. How would one go about this? I'd say one good way would be through song. And I say, if certain groups of people couldn't dig that Trey and the band are trying to stay clean, then those people aren't any kind of Phans for Phish, anyhow. Furthermore, it would be nice if a few more bands had the balls to call out the bullshit that has been happening on the scene. If you wanna have a good time, that's your prerogative. Just do it with some discretion and regard for your fellow man.

I would like to take a moment to ask all the posers, lot lizards, tour rats, wannabe gangstas, and all around douchebags to find something else to do when Phish returns to the stage. There are many reasons why Phish stopped touring and a key reason, according to a personal conversation I had with a band member said that the scene around the band was getting out of hand. Yes, Trey and other band members had some issues to deal with but the fact that they all spent more time dealing with managing the circus that followed the band than they did in rehearsal took a major toll on them. If you are a true music lover, and love and respect Phish for what they do on stage, as opposed to what they generate in the parking lot, by all means welcome home. For those of you out there that have nothing better to do than sell No2 and break into cars, just stay home. You should have plenty of opportunities to "rage the lot" at Bonnaroo. Long Live Phish!

The only copy I ever had of 8/6/96 was a tape that I lent to someone so they could hear it. Remember TAPES?!?! Wish I could post it on nugs.net for all to hear, but alas : ( The one thing that people haven't really addressed is the fact that it will be nearly impossible to "Tour" with anyone nowadays without being independantly wealthy. In Fall of 94, I could fill up my car for like $15 and score a ticket in the lot for $15 as well. For me to come up with the $30 I needed to see the next show meant I only had to sell like 1 1/2 - 2 cases of beer in the lot. Try selling alcohol from show to show and see how fast you get busted by these new corporate sponsored venue's aggressive security. Do you know how many Grilled Cheeses you'd have to sell to fill up your car with gas OR even afford a ticket these days??? Gimme a break. The lot community does not exist anymore to support "touring." As fed up with some of the Spangers (spare changers)& Lot Rats as I got, sadly that was part of the mystique of running away with the circus. Who the hell could afford to see more than just a couple of close proximity East Coast shows back to back? Unless you've saved up, the reality of "Touring" is as Dead as the Fat Man. RIP JERRY

Okay, so... Sorry to rain on everyones parade, but no one has considered that touring, as WE knew it, is going to be basically impossible for fans nowadays. $4.00 a gallon?! C'mon! The window has closed. I'd see the band in my home town if they played. I just don't see these kids being able to do it like they would want to, like WE DID! ;) Also, the band won't be "raking it in" as some would predict... Without the touring fans(I am not talking about the crusty lot folk, the FAN$) they will be forced into smaller theatres.(maybe not a bad thing) Besides the fact, most of us have moved on. Many fond memories though...I still respect "the phish from Vermont". I just don't see a large "built-in" audience in these cities that is going to sell out the big places. Hopefully they can prove me wrong. Even if they do, it won't be the financial windfall they might expect. Hell, how are people buying gas and groceries as it is? Who has discretionary income anymore? Aren't we all kinda in survival mode currently? Still, an interesting about-face from Trey. Godspeed.

My point is that a lot of People would come from very far away to see a reunion project from PHish. Or.. Phish throws down 2 festies a year One for New Year (somewhere in CA) and One in Maine. Then Hit 3-days run in CHICAGO, for the mid-west, NY MGS or PA Spect. For east coast. ect.....

I mean dave mattews still tours at the same venues Phish did soo Why wouldn't Phish be able to do it. If any Band can pull it off it's Phish....

Holy shit.. i didnt know that the "This is redrocks, this is the edge" quote was at this show! Maybe I do have this.

My 2Cents. It amazes me on how many of you never got to see Phish. Am I really that old (32). I have seen them a shit ton. I acutally started to loose intrest when "Billy Breathes" came out. I felt that that album wasnt as groundbreaking as say "Picture of Nectar" or "Rift".

But I would never say that "They will not be as good", speaking of experience you only keep growing as a musician. Keep learning and getting better.

Just some Festies from our beloved phellows would be alright with me!

Also, ladies and gentleman, let's keep focused on the Phish at hand here. Keep it simple, the parking lot is where you park your car. The band is in the venue. The lot lizards and what not can fight with the "lot law" while we are inside dancing. Thank you.

hate to say it...but this is getting old. I've been over it for a while now. I too get my hopes up whenever something like this is announced, but what was really announced? nothing. I'm glad trey feels bad for some of the stupid crap he said after the break up. Who remembers this little quote, "rock music is the servant of the drug culture"? Can someone who is trying to be clean and sober become a servant of the drug culture again? I mean these are years of our lives passing by, without our band, that we can't get back. I guess when i'm 60 and they decide to come back it will be too late. If it was a "cultural timing thing"....then i think their time ran out. I'll believe it when i see it, but right now, i'm done holding my breath.

i hope to be dancing with phish when i'm/they're 60+.....that would be great....and i have heard NOTHING like this since coventry, i haven't even come close to "holding my breath" for a reunion.....sure it was something i always wanted to happen, but never had any indication like this that it really might happen......the whole kuroda leaving the black crowes for "something special and big" with trey kind of sealed my hopes that it's TRUE....it really feels that way....i might be blue right now, but its not because i'm down, cause since yesterday i started to whole my breathe........

hey wags in carolina,

I don't want to sound negative, but did you seriously think the curtain was a strong way to finish the bands last set? I mean the song is ok but def, should've played something with more heart. Hell I hate fluffhead, but I would have much rather heard that then sad ass curtain. Just my opinion. But it will be nice to see the boys get back together even it is just to hear a rendition of curtain or fluff. I just knew when I was sitting on the side of the hill in Coventry that there was no way it could end like that, and hopefully from the looks of Trey's comments, it wont have to.

And to all of you OLDER cats that think Phish has done the best they can do, then stay home with you memories, bc I know for a fact that no musician has played their best in the past. Their best is always yet to happen. So as long as the boys are still alive, they will continue to get better.

Do it right boys. Take your time Trey. Your real Phans aren't going anywhere.

sorry, "something with more heart" were the wrong words. Just something a little more reminiscent of their career. My bad
