FOR THE FIRST TIME
The history of LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide), or more commonly, acid, is a long strange one. On this day in 1943 the inventor of the drug, Dr. Albert Hoffman sampled what he’d synthesized for the first time. Known as “Bicycle Day,” here’s a nice recount of this significant moment in self-medication from Wikipedia. Perhaps more than any other substance, LSD eventually helped shape the ’60s counter-culture and the music that came out of it.
Here’s an excerpt from the documentary It Was 20 Years Ago Today that discusses the impact on people like John Lennon and Jefferson Airplane.
The Beatles and George Martin discuss the impact of drugs including LSD on their music.
Appropriately, here’s a wonderfully bent visual interpretation of William Shatner’s version of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”
For spice, we offer you a neat take on “Lucy” from Barbara Dickson in 1975 for the musical John Paul George Ringo… And Bert
And lastly, a glorious ’60s propaganda film that tells the tale a hot dog gone horribly awry.
