Yo La Tengo welcomed Wilco to share the stage at their Friday night concert in Chicago. Wilco, on a night off from a three-show hometown run at the Riviera Theatre, emerged to augment the trio on four covers to start Yo La Tengo’s encore at the Metro.
The first hint at Wilco’s participation came when Yo La Tengo covered the Chicago-based band’s “If I Ever Was A Child” early in the evening. Members of both acts then loaded the stage for the cover-filled encore.

Up first was a take on The Beatles’ 1964 single “She’s A Woman” featuring YLT’s Ira Kaplan and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy sharing lead vocal duties. Yo La Tengo bassist James McNew then fronted the assembled bands on Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home stunner “Love Minus Zero/No Limit.”
The collaborative encore continued with Yo La Tengo and Wilco tearing through The Heartbreakers’ “One Track Mind” helmed by Kaplan. “We’re not convinced this is actually happening,” Ira said before the two bands ended their time together with a rendition of “Who Knows Where The Time Goes?” Yo La Tengo drummer Georgia Hubley took center stage to sing the Fairport Convention’s signature song.
