Yo La Tengo played a memorable live session at the studios of Seattle public radio station KEXP last month. The trio focused on material from their recently released album, This Stupid World, and also fit in a beloved classic for a set recorded between nights of a two-night stand at Seattle’s Neptune Theatre.
The band consisting of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew issued the self-produced This Stupid World last month. YLT’s 16th studio album and first full-length effort since 2018’s There’s A Riot Going On contains nine new songs.
Ira Kaplan led the Hoboken, New Jersey-birthed band through This Stupid World cut “Fallout” to start the Live On KEXP set. Georgia Hubley then helmed the LP’s pretty track “Aselestine” from behind the kit.
“Let’s go back to our childhoods,” Kaplan said to introduce the ensuing “Big Day Coming.” The live staple dates back to 1993’s Painful. Yo La Tengo returned to This Stupid World to close the musical portion of the session with its title track. All three members then spoke with host Cheryl Waters about the album, their famed Hanukkah shows, tour plans and more.
