Joe Russo’s Almost Dead added a new cover to their repertoire on Thursday night in Denver. The band debuted the James Gang’s “Walk Away” during the concert at Mission Ballroom.

The Joe Walsh-penned rocker emerged out of “St. Stephen” in the second set and led into “New Minglewood Blues.” Thursday’s performance marked the first time JRAD has played “Walk Away.” Guitarist Tom Hamilton handled lead vocals. Namesake drummer Joe Russo and Hamilton’s fellow guitarist Scott Metzger sang harmony on the chorus.

“Walk Away” was originally recorded by the James Gang and appeared on the Cleveland rock trio’s 1971 album Thirds. Written and sung by Walsh, the song became one of the band’s best-known tracks and was released as the album’s lead single.

The new addition came during a second set that also featured “Till The Morning Comes,” Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle,” “He’s Gone,” “Terrapin Station” and “Not Fade Away.” JRAD opened the night with “New Speedway Boogie” and also worked through “Estimated Prophet,” Martha Reeves & The Vandellas’ “Dancing In The Street,” “I Need A Miracle,” “Crazy Fingers” and “The Wheel.”

The Mission Ballroom performance was the first of three consecutive Colorado shows for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. The band heads to Vail tonight for a concert at Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater before concluding the run Saturday at Dillon Amphitheater.
