Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy Reveals Rock Bands He’d Like To Hear Cover ‘Heavy Metal Drummer’

The frontman had two acts in mind to play the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot classic.

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy wrote “Heavy Metal Drummer” for the band’s groundbreaking 2002 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The ode to youth has been a staple of Wilco’s live shows ever since. Tweedy was recently asked which well-known hard rock/heavy metal act he’d want to cover the song.

The question was posed by Matt Wake as part of his interview with Tweedy for AL.com. Jeff brought up two different bands in his response.

“I can’t quite see it fitting any of the bands I like … I want to say Mastodon, but the subject matter is just too light to make a good Mastodon song,” Tweedy said of the Atlanta-based outfit fronted by Brent Hinds.

“The band Darkness isn’t exactly a metal band, but they lean metal, and they have a good sense of humor. So maybe they could make something better out of it,” Jeff added. Hearing The Darkness vocalist Justin Hawkins sing about “Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned” would certainly be interesting.

Wilco launched a three-night stand at The Capitol Theatre last night. The shows at the Port Chester, New York rock palace are the second of three runs with the promise of no repeats. Tweedy and his bandmates delivered a 23-song performance on Thursday. Rarities, at least for the band’s current tour in support of Cruel Country, that made the setlist included “One Wing,” “You Never Know,” “Bull Black Nova,” “What Light” and “Far, Far Away.”
