Widespread Panic Turns Saturday In Las Vegas Into Ladies Night

Last night Widespread Panic played their second of three nights at the Park Theater at the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Ahead of their Halloween-themed show tonight the Southern-jam titans had something special up their sleeve as they turned their gig into a special “Ladies Night”-themed affair doubling down on songs that featured either a women’s name or have lyrics that referred to women.

John Bell & Co. got the evening started with a one-two punch of “Greta” > “Little Lilly.” Next up was “Arleen” and their first take on The Band’s “Ophelia” since October of last year. “Party At Your Mama’s House” segued into “You Should Be Glad,” from 2006’s Earth To America, which references a grieving woman. The ‘Ladies Night’ theme continued with a cover David Bromberg’s “Sharon,” with WSP closing out the first set with “Ain’t Life Grand” that features the lyrics “My wife’s got the blues. Now I’ve got them. Gonna bring her a kiss. Make those blues run.”

Panic kicked off their second set with a Dave Schools-led take on NRBQ’s “Flat Foot Flewzy.” “Diner,” which features lyrics about a female cook began a lengthy jammed-filled run that segued into more women-referencing tunes with “Christmas Katie” > “Jam” > “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” > “Aunt Avis.” WSP busted out their cover of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” next, playing the Let It Bleed track for the first time in 50 shows. Old school Panic fave “Coconut,” with lyric “they smell like ladies lying in the sun” followed. The jam act debuted their take on Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee” next. The bluesy rocker from Wildflowers is all about a woman that Petty refers to as Honey Bee, and it’s the second tune off the album that they’ve covered in a little over a week. The band finished off their fourth set of the run with Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mamma,” from their 1974 release Standing on the Verge of Getting It On.

Widespread Panic returned to the stage to close out their “Ladies Night” show with two song encore. First up was a take on Bloodkin’s “End Of The Show,” that starts out with the line “Leaned over and gave her a kiss, She blew up in my face” and features a woman named Maria, before finishing things off with “Bowlegged Woman.”
