Widespread Panic Plays One For The Kids & Delivers A Bust Out At Red Rocks

On Saturday night Widespread Panic played their second of three sold-out shows at Red Rocks. As they’ve done in the past the Georgia rockers got a bit creative with their song selection delivering a themed-set as their opener while later in the evening split second half of their show in two due to weather-related reasons.

Widespread Panic got their 56th straight sellout at the iconic venue rolling with the one-two punch of “Rebirtha” > “Blackout Blues.” “Little Kin” and “Radio Child” were paired next kicking off a string of kid-referencing tunes from the Southern-jam titans. “C. Brown” about everyone’s favorite loveable loser Peanuts character was tapped next. The first “Tickle The Truth” since April of last year and “Stop-Go” loosely kept the kid theme going, if in just title only. “Weight Of The World” with the lyric “Children, too, fall to this weight of the world” closed out the run of kid songs with a cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Tail Dragger” bringing the opening frame to a close.

Panic kicked off their second set of the night with a blistering take on “North.” The sextet went with back-to-back covers serving up David Bromberg’s “Sharon” and Alan Price’s “Sell Sell.” After takes on “Good People” and “Second Skin” the band was forced to take a pause as they removed their LED screen over the stage due to high winds. After a short break, WSP returned for a third set opening things up with a seamless run that stitched together “Greta,” “Cease Fire” and “Blue Indian.”

The biggest surprise of the night came after a take on “Holden Oversoul” as the band unearthed the Vic Chesnutt-David Schools collaboration “Puppy Sleeps” for the third time ever. The tune, which appeared on the Panic and Chesnutt project brute.’s 2002 sophomore album co-balt was last played on April 22, 2002 – a span of 1,070 shows. John Bell & Co. followed that with the second song from that release offering up “Expiration Day” as JoJo Hermann led the band through “Flat Foot Flewy” to bring the split stanza to an end. Widespread Panic returned to the stage with “Porch Song” occupying the encore slot to wrap the middle show of the run.
