Widespread Panic Covers Neil Young & Tom Petty As Part Of Old School Birmingham Finale
Georgia rockers Widespread Panic concluded a two-night stand in Birmingham on Saturday night. The band dug deep for a pair of covers they hadn’t performed since 2015 and 2016 respectively, as part of their Saturday performance at the BJCC Arena. Panic put the focus on older material. “Blight,” a song co-written with Vic Chesnutt that was first performed by the band on October 27, 1995, was the most recently debuted original played on Saturday.
Panic kicked off the first set of classics with a run of “Ribs & Whiskey,” “Send Your Mind, “Proving Ground” and “Walkin’ (For Your Love)” ahead of a “Holden Oversoul” the group jammed into “The Last Straw.” Next up was the instrumental “B Of D,” along with a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers Guns & Money.” WSP brought the penultimate set of the run to a close with “Ain’t Life Grand.”
Saturday’s second set began with the first cover of Michael Stanley’s “Let’s Get The Show On The Road” since October 26, 2016. Then, keyboardist JoJo Hermann led “Blackout Blues.” Up next was an improv-heavy sequence combining “Who Do You Belong To?” and “Mercy” ahead of “Weight Of The World” and “Big Wooly Mammoth.” Then, “Papa’s Home” led into the evening’s drums and bass segment before Panic wrapped the set with “Stop-Go” > “Blight” > “Climb To Safety.” For the encore, Panic treated fans to three songs written by other artists. First was “Trouble” by Cat Stevens, which was followed by covers of Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.” Widespread Panic hadn’t performed “Rockin’ In The Free World” since October 25, 2015.
Widespread Panic returns to the road next month for three nights in Washington, D.C. Check out videos from Saturday’s concert:
