Ween Ends 21-Year Wait For ‘Shinola, Vol. 2’ With Black Friday Release

Ween fans finally have a release date for Shinola, Vol. 2, more than two decades after the first installment of the band’s outtakes and rarities series. The collection arrives November 27 via Rhino, with a double-LP edition available at participating Record Store Day Black Friday stores and a single-CD edition available at all retailers.

“BROWN FRIDAY. After 21 years, Shinola, Vol. 2 is finally ready,” Ween wrote in the announcement, which included audio of “Kim Smoltz.” The band revealed that Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo) began assembling the tracklist over a decade ago. The collection spans Ween’s recording career, bringing together previously unreleased outtakes, rare B-sides and the first official releases of longtime fan favorites.

Among those favorites are “Kim Smoltz,” “She Caught My Fancy,” “Weed Whore” and “The Belvodine.” Other selections include “The Argus, Pt. 2,” “Skycruiser” and “Ooh Vah Lah (Sludge Version).” The Record Store Day listing identifies the vinyl edition as an RSD exclusive limited to 9,200 copies, pressed on “Just Brown” vinyl.

Shinola, Vol. 1 was released on July 19, 2005. The original collection gathered 12 tracks, including “Gabrielle,” “Boys Club,” “Did You See Me?” and “Monique The Freak.” Its follow-up opens with “Kim Smoltz,” which dates to the sessions for Ween’s 1997 album The Mollusk. Though left off the album, the song circulated among fans and made its live debut on February 13, 2016 during the band’s reunion run at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

The announcement follows Ween’s recent unveiling of Boognish Provides, an archival collection documenting seven concerts from the 1994 – 95 Chocolate & Cheese tour. That release arrives October 16 as a 14CD boxed set and a double-LP selection of performances.
