Ween Continues Reunion Run At 1st Bank Center In Broomfield

Ween continued their first run of shows following a 2012 breakup on Saturday night at the sold-out 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. Guitarists Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo as well as keyboardist Glenn McClelland, drummer Claude Coleman Jr. and bassist Dave Dreiwitz played 30 songs last night including a debut, a Motorhead cover, an acoustic segment and plenty of material from 1991’s The Pod LP.

The five-piece opened the show with their ode to the beloved Northeast breakfast sandwich “Pork Roll Egg & Cheese,” one of seven songs from The Pod played on Saturday. Ween then rolled through “Take Me Away” from Chocolate & Cheese and Quebec’s “Transdermal Celebration.” The diverse set continued with songs from various eras before Gener and Deaner strapped on acoustic guitars for a five-song segment. Gene and Dean started the acoustic segment with the evening’s lone live debut – “Kim Smoltz” – a The Mollusk outtake. “Tried & True,” “Baby Bitch,” “Help Me Scrape The Mucus Off My Brain” and “Joppa Road” also featured Freeman and Melchiondo on acoustics.

Towards the end of the set Ween played their first cover of the run. Dreiwitz handled lead vocals on Motorhead’s “Ace Of Spades” in honor of Lemmy who passed away in December. One of the evening’s biggest surprises took place during the encore, when Ween dusted off The Pod track “Pollo Asado.” The band had only performed “Pollo Asado” twice prior, once in 1998 and once in 2003. After playing 33 songs on Friday and 30 songs on Saturday Ween is on pace to perform more than 90 different tunes over the course of the run which concludes tonight.
