In late 1965 the Grateful Dead laid down a demo of a song entitled “Mindbender (Confusion’s Prince)” with the writing credited to Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh. The DeadDisc site notes, “the song was performed a few times by the Grateful Dead in the first half of 1966.” Footage purportedly of one of those versions was recently posted on Facebook.
In film captured by the BBC fans get glimpses of young Jerry, Phil, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan with the soundtrack of “Mindbender.” A note accompanying the video claims the clip was recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium on June 3, 1966 and is the second earliest known footage of the Grateful Dead.
