Umphrey’s McGee hit the Fillmore Detroit on Saturday on their 25th anniversary Tour. UM bassist Ryan Stasik, whose side project Doom Flamingo opened the show, welcomed DF frontwoman Kanika Moore for a cover of a Radiohead’s “Creep” during the second set.

Umphrey’s opened with the instrumental “Catshot.” While the composition opens the band’s 2021 album You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall And Left A Raging Bull, UM debuted the tune in 2009 and has only played it seven times in the past five years, as per All Things Umphreys.

From “Catshot,” UM headed into “Pure Saturation” off their 2022 album Asking For A Friend before fitting a jam on Miles Davis’ “It’s About That Time” into an 18-minute “Nothing Too Fancy.” “Suxity” concluded the seamless four-song opening sequence. Following “Mulche’s Odyssey” and a pairing of “So Much” and Asking For A Friend’s “I Don’t Know What I Want,” UM welcomed Doom Flamingo saxophonist Mike Quinn on “Made To Measure” before closing the first frame with the instrumental “Wizard Burial Ground.”

The classic “JaJunk” launched the second set followed by “Wife Soup” and “Spires.” “Escape Goat” then led into a return to “Nothing Too Fancy” before Stasik introduced his Doom Flamingo bandmate Kanika Moore:

“About 10 years ago I moved to Charleston, South Carolina. About six years after living there my wife reminded me that I didn’t have any friends. It was the best thing she could ever say to me. I was like, ‘shit, yeah I need to make some friends. I should make some musician friends.’ And I did…this is one of my best friends and I’m super proud to invite her to the stage right now. Kanika Moore from Doom Flamingo and Charleston, South Carolina. We love you Detroit.”

Moore then proceeded to lead the band through Radiohead’s “Creep,” offering her typical powerhouse vocal performance on the Pablo Honey hit and the English band’s debut single. “Creep,” performed by UM for just the second time, counted as the penultimate song of the second set before UM sealed it with “Hurt Bird Bath,” which clocked in at 16 and a half minutes. Umphrey’s McGee returned to encore with a substantial “Believe The Lie.”
