Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out ‘Memories Of Home’ In Chicago

Thursday night, Umphrey’s McGee began a three-show hometown New Year’s Run in Chicago with a show at The Riviera Theatre. The band’s first appearance at The Riv since 2008 featured a bust out acoustic performance of an original not played in nearly 900 shows.

UM’s one-night-only return to the site of their 2004 and 2010 New Year’s Runs launched with a performance of “Similar Skin.” Toward the end of the set, guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger employed acoustic instruments for the band’s first performance of “Memories Of Home” since September 1, 2008, and only fourth offering of the Cinninger original to date. The 897 show gap between renditions of the Safety In Numbers outtake was followed by an acoustic rendering of “Gone For Good.” A fully electrified “Make It Right” wrapped the first set.

Sticking with originals Umphrey’s partnered “Wappy Sprayberry” with the conclusion of the “Bridgeless” begun in the first set to open up set two. “Remind Me” and “Ringo” continued the trend before UM offered the evening’s lone cover – ZZ Top’s “Cheap Sunglasses.” Out of the cover came “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” and the second set ended with “The Linear” > “Upward.” UM’s classic “40’s Theme” was assigned encore duty, marking the final song of the night.

UM heads over to the Aragon Ballroom for shows tonight and tomorrow. TourGigs is offering webcasts of each concert. Watch officially shared footage of “Similar Skin” from The Riv here:
