Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out ‘Bombtrack’ In Chicago
By Scott Bernstein Dec 31, 2016 • 11:46 am PST
For the second night in a row, Chicago rockers Umphrey’s McGee dug deep into their repertoire as part of a hometown New Year’s Run. On Friday, UM moved the festivities to Aragon Ballroom, where they busted out a Rage Against The Machine cover with help from a friend.
Colorado funk revivalists The Motet got things started by opening the festivities. UM then took the stage with a “Mulche’s Odyssey” that included a quote of “Dopeman” by N.W.A. “Speak Up” came next along with rarity “Anchor Drops” which gave way to “Phil’s Farm.” UM sure likes debuting material during New Year’s Run and on Friday unveiled “North Route.” It was then time for the end of the “Nothing Too Fancy” the band began the previous night at The Riviera. A sequence of “Walletsworth” and “Kula” came before a set-closing rendition of “Bombtrack.” Drummer Kris Myers served as frontman for the Rage cover, while The Motet drummer Dave Watts hopped behind the kit.
“The Floor” served as second set opener. From there, UM treated fans to classics “Much Obliged” and “Hurt Bird Bath.” The action continued with “Conduit” ahead of a wild “1348” featuring “Slacker” and “Miami Virtue” within. For the encore, Umphrey’s served up “JaJunk.”
Umphrey’s McGee returns to The Aragon tonight. A live webcast is available via TourGigs.com.
