The 50th anniversary of the Monterey International Pop Festival was celebrated this past weekend with a three-day event at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. Many of the weekend’s acts honored the original event with tributes and a handful of those who played the 1967 festival also performed at the 2017 installment. Leon Bridges welcomed Nathaniel Rateliff to duet on Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” and Nicki Bluhm teamed with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.” Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats served up a rendition of Big Brother and The Holding Company’s “Piece of My Heart,” while The Head and the Heart delivered a stirring performance of The Mama’s and The Papa’s “California Dreamin” with a surprise appearance by original member Michelle Phillips.
Jack Johnson and his band had many covers in store as they took on The Band and Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” with help from Norah Jones, Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady,” Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker” and “Rocky Raccoon” by The Beatles with special guest Jim James. The set also saw G. Love contribute to “Mudfootball” and “Rodeo Clowns.” The Grateful Dead were represented by Phil Lesh who performed with The Terrapin Family Band. Nicki Bluhm sat-in with Phil and The TXR Family Band on “The Music Never Stopped.” A few of the Dead’s songs were covered by other acts as Hiss Golden Messenger performed “Brown-Eyed Women” and Norah Jones played “Ripple.” Furthermore, Gary Clark Jr. paid tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Langhorne Slim tackled Canned Heat’s “Going Up The County.” Additional collaborations included Father John Misty sitting-in with Leon Bridges, G. Love guesting with North Mississippi Allstars and ALO joined by famed photographer Danny Clinch on harmonica and Jack Johnson. Original Monterey performers Booker T. Jones and Eric Burdon along with Lesh and Michelle Phillips were those who played both the 1967 and 2017 events.
