The Trey Anastasio Band took the stage last Saturday, September 30 at the Sound On Sound festival in Bridgeport, Connecticut. TAB’s performance was their first since the tragic death of James Casey and guitarist Trey Anastasio dedicated the group’s set to the saxophonist.

Anastasio, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, drummer Russ Lawton, trombonist Natalie Cressman, percussionist Cyro Baptista and bassist Dezron Douglas were joined for portions of the nine-song set by Jo Lampert on “vocals and other stuff.” Lampert provided backing vocals during Phish‘s complete musical costume of the David Bowie album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars on Halloween 2016 in Las Vegas. The Brooklyn-based artist also performed with Trey Anastasio as part of two The Beacon Jams livestream concerts in the fall of 2020.

Trey Anastasio introduced the band and Lampert after “Everything’s Right,” the fifth song of the evening. “This show tonight is dedicated to our brother, our friend who we love, James Casey,” Anastasio told the crowd. “This is our first show since James passed on and we love him very much. He’s with us tonight and I want to say that out loud and have you guys help us through this one.”

A rousing “Push On ‘Til The Day” followed Anastasio’s comments. The guitarist worked teases of “Layla” into the TAB staple one night after he performed the Derek & The Dominos' classic with Tedeschi Trucks Band at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“Welcome, welcome,” Anastasio exclaimed before the Trey Anastasio Band lit into the “Set Your Soul Free” opener in Bridgeport’s Seaside Park on Saturday. “A Wave Of Hope” followed and then the guitarist turned to the Phish repertoire for “The Moma Dance.” TAB rolled through oldie “Alive Again” and offered a slightly extended “Everything’s Right” ahead of the dedication and ensuing “Push On ‘Til The Day.” Next, “Sand” led into a particularly emotional “A Life Beyond The Dream.” TAB went on to wrap the set with “First Tube.”

Next up for Trey Anastasio is Phish’s eight-night fall tour, which begins this Friday, October 6 in Nashville. The Trey Anastasio Band returns to the stage later this month at the Suwannee Hulaween festival in Live Oak, Florida.
