Trey Anastasio led the Trey Anastasio Band through a performance at the Wanee Festival in Live Oak, Florida on Saturday. Anastasio, who later sat-in with Bob Weir, took a moment during TAB’s set to talk about the late great Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks.
Butch Trucks was one of the founders of Wanee and Anastasio made a guest appearance with Butch and the Allman Brothers Band at the 2014 installment of the festival. Trey talked about what a memorable experience that was for him and noted Butch’s contributions to the ABB he felt that night.
“I came onstage and everyone on stage was a musical assassin,” the guitarist noted. He called Oteil Burbridge one of his favorite musicians and discussed what it was like to play with Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. “But what I noticed was…we kicked into the first tune and I heard this sound behind me,” Trey continued and then feigned the drumwork of Butch Trucks before saying, “And I thought, wow! That’s the sound of the Allman Brothers.” He later added, “When you stand up here and you feel it like I felt it there was a guy driving that truck, Butch Trucks, it felt like a truck going down the street.”
Anastasio also mentioned a time Butch took the members of Phish fishing and told them all sorts of “crazy rock and roll stories.” After his speech, Trey dedicated a cover of “O-o-h Child” by Five Stairsteps to Trucks.
