Trey Anastasio Covers Bowie & Offers Solo Acoustic Debuts In Troy

By Scott Bernstein Mar 11, 2017 7:19 am PST

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio continued a run of three solo acoustic shows on Friday night at the historic Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy, New York. Anastasio played 23 songs over the course of one long set and an encore with only three repeats from the tour opener in Northampton.

Once again, Trey showed off his storyteller persona throughout the evening, often telling the tales behind each tune or from past events in his history. He treated the capacity crowd to material from various periods of his career and fit a David Bowie cover within the encore. There were also plenty of solo acoustic debuts from the guitarist.

Anastasio opened with “Strange Design” and then went with Big Boat track “Blaze On.” Trey unearthed “Mountains In The Mist” next as it appeared for the first time in the solo acoustic format since a March 2, 2011 performance during a TAB show. “The Wedge” and “Shade” followed before Trey told the story of his 2006 arrest in nearby Whitehall and became emotional as he discussed that fateful night and the 14 months that came after as an introduction to “Backwards Down The Number Line.”

There were many surprises one of the biggest of which was Trey performing a solo acoustic version of “Rubberneck Lions,” which he called his favorite Oysterhead song. In addition, he thrilled the crowd with his debut acoustic “The Lizards” and rare unplugged takes on “Guelah Papyrus,” “Wading In The Velvet Sea” and “Carini.” For the encore, the guitarist started off with the run’s first cover – David Bowie’s “Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide” and capped the night with “More.” Anastasio concludes the brief solo acoustic tour tonight in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
