Trey Anastasio Band Debuts Bob Marley Cover In Santa Ana
The Trey Anastasio Band featuring Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio brought their fall tour to the O.C. on Wednesday night. Anastasio and his powerful troupe played The Observatory OC in Santa Ana, California, where they debuted their take on a beloved Bob Marley song.
TAB kicked off the night with a “Sometime After Sunset”/”Mozambique” pairing along with the recently revived “The Way I Feel,” which was played for just the third time in this year. Anastasio then led “Speak To Me” and “Pigtail” ahead of the group’s take on the Page McConnell-penned instrumental “Magilla.” Next up was TAB’s debut cover of Bob Marley’s “Coming In From The Cold.” Trey sounded great leading on vocals and the horn section added to the marvelous rendition of the tune from Bob Marley’s 1980 album, Uprising.
Wednesday’s first set continued with staple “Curlew’s Call” and the instrumental “Sidewalks Of San Francisco,” which was played for the first time in 14 years back on Friday night at the tour opener. Trey then picked from three different eras in closing the set with “Shine,” “Frost” and “Last Tube.” While Phish busted out “Frost” for just the second time as part of this past summer’s famed Baker’s Dozen residency, the TAB version in Santa Ana was the group’s first of 2017.
Set two started with “In Rounds” off Paper Wheels and the early era gem “Sweet Dreams Melinda.” The improvisational highlight of the night came next with the pairing of “Spin” and “Simple Twist Up Dave.” As usual, the composed portion of “Spin” led into a Hendrix-esque jam featuring lots of shredding from Anastasio. Next up was “Tide Turns” and classics “Cayman Review” and “Goodbye Head.” Trey then fronted the group on his hopeful 2017 original “Rise/Come Together” ahead of the horn-infused “Ocelot” and the climactic “Push On Til The Day.”
Earlier this year the Trey Anastasio Band debuted a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Back In The USA” in the late guitar legend’s hometown of St. Louis. “Back In The USA’s” fall tour debut opened an encore that also included “Soul Planet,” one of two “Soul” songs premiered on Friday in Las Vegas. Next up for Trey is a performance at an event honoring Red Light Management’s Coran Capshaw followed by two TAB shows at Oakland’s Fox Theater.
