Tom Marshall Chats With Fellow Phish Lyricist Scott Herman On ‘Under The Scales’

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio played his first ever fully solo acoustic show on March 8 at the Academy Of Music Theatre in Northampton, Massachusetts. The concert was filled with firsts including the first time Anastasio shouted out an unheralded figure who is important in Phish history, Scott Herman. Scott Herman has written portions of at least 18 Phish songs and Trey stopped the show in Northampton to have the capacity crowd give the songwriter a nice round of applause. This week’s episode of Under The Scales features a chat between host (and fellow Phish lyricist) Tom Marshall, Herman and Marshall associate Stephen “Tebo” Thomas.

Marshall conducts the podcast in Q&A format for the most part. Tom starts by talking about some of Herman’s contributions to the Phish canon including portions of “Limb By Limb,” “Cavern,” “The Squirming Coil” and “Meatstick.” Included within are a number of insider stories such as the time Tom, Scott and Tebo parked a car backstage in a way that stopped loadout in its tracks and about the trio’s experience at Clifford Ball, the first Phish festival. Herman also talks about the Phish lyric he’s most proud of, his songwriting methods and much more.
