A surprising story broke yesterday when it was revealed Smashing Pumpkins would welcome back original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin for this summer’s tour with Marilyn Manson. In honor of Jimmy returning to Smashing Pumpkins, let’s look back at the time the drummer collaborated with another Chicago band –Umphrey’s McGee.

Umphrey’s McGee debuted their rendition of the Smashing Pumpkins’ 1993 hit “Cherub Rock” at The Vic Theatre in Chicago on December 30, 2002. The band has dusted off “Cherub Rock” an average of every 50 since with the most recent version having taken place on February 22, 2014 at The Riviera Theatre in Chicago. February 22, 2014 was the third and final night of UM’s three-night stand at the Windy City venue. For that evening’s encore, Umphrey’s welcomed Chamberlin to play drums on “Cherub Rock” with UM drummer Kris Myers moving over to Andy Farag’s percussion rig.
