This year’s Hangtown Halloween Ball begins today and continues through Sunday at the El Dorado Fairgrounds in Placerville, California. For today’s Throwback Thursday we look back at the 2013 installment of the now five-year old festival, when Greensky Bluegrass celebrated Halloween early by taking the stage for a late night set dressed as festival hosts Railroad Earth. and were backed by RRE drummer Carey Harmon. “Railroad Greensky” opened with the New Jersey band’s much-beloved “Long Way to Go.”
The Michigan band was backed by RRE drummer Carey Harmon for the inventive performance. Each member of Greensky honored a member of Railroad Earth as Greensky banjoist Mike Bont dressed like Andy Goessling, mandolinist Paul Hoffman did his best John Skehan, guitarist/vocalist Dave Bruzza was Todd Sheaffer, bassist Mike Devol paid tribute to Andrew Altman and Greensky’s dobro wiz Anders Beck donned the gear of Tim Carbone.
Greensky Bluegrass’s set included a number of their own originals as well as bluegrass covers performed by both bands such as “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox.” Watch the version of RRE’s “Long Way To Go” that opened Greensky’s set:
Railroad Earth plays three nights at Hangtown Halloween Ball which will also feature sets from Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Beats Antique, Lettuce, Yonder Mountain String Band, North Mississippi Allstars and many more. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.
