The New Mastersounds Bassist Pete Shand Raising Funds For Emergency Surgery
By Andy Kahn Aug 21, 2017 • 7:11 am PDT

The New Mastersounds bassist Pete Shand will undergo emergency surgery this week. The band has established a fund to help cover the cost of the procedure.
According to an announcement from the band, by Wednesday Shand needs to raise enough money for a deposit before doctors will operate on him. The currently bedridden Shand is suffering from a spinal condition that is a direct result of his playing bass.
A Go Fund Me page was created for those wishing to donate to Shand’s emergency surgery costs.
Here’s the note on Pete’s condition posted by the band:
Pete Shand is the bassist of The New Mastersounds, and has been since its inception 18 years ago.
Pete needs your help! He is having emergency surgery on August 24. He has developed a spinal condition as a direct result of playing the bass. He is suffering with severe nerve pain, numbness and muscle wastage, and is currently bedridden, unable to fly home to Europe for this essential operation.
Aside from being the NMS backbone and a serious road dog, he’s also played and produced with many stars throughout his career… from Edwin Starr to Bernard Purdie to Derek of Pretty Lights. Without this surgery, Pete’s career is over… no more filling the world with joyful funkiness.
We have managed to schedule emergency surgery for him, and this is where we need your help. By Wednesday, we need to raise a deposit for the surgery, or the doctors will refuse to operate. If you love The New Mastersounds, Pete, or funk music in general, please consider donating any amount to help Pete achieve a full recover. Your donation will help Pete to have this much needed surgery and recover, just in time for NMS fall tour.
