The Disco Biscuits launched their two-night Showtime At The Drive In run in Frederick, Maryland on Friday. The show featured a bevy of tDB classics as well as a bust out of “On Time” for the encore.
The Disco Biscuits — guitarist Jon Gutwillig, bassist Marc Brownstein, keyboardist Aron Magner and drummer Allen Aucoin — got the four-song first set got underway with the vintage “Little Betty Boop.” Barber led the group through the first couple verses before Aucoin dropped the band into the four on the floor section. Magner draped some electric piano over Gutwillig’s guitar riffing as Brownie and Aucoin locked the band into the trancey groove. Bisco then worked their way through an inverted version of “Crickets” before finishing up “Boop,” which included teases of “John Scofield’s “A Go Go.” The quartet kept the classics rolling with “Magellan” and first set closer “Spaga.”

Another old school tune, “Mindless Dribble,” kicked off the nearly seamless second set. The band then found their way into “Aceetobee” ahead of “Catalyst,” the only song of both sets debuted after 2000, as per Phantasy Tour. The conclusions of both “Aceetobee” and “Mindless Dribble” followed ahead of the staple, “Voices Insane,” to complete the continuous section. The second set came to a close with, “The Overture,” the first movement from Gutwillig’s 1998 rock opera, Hot Air Ballon. For the encore, tDB dusted off “On Time” for the first time since January 26, 2019, for a gap of over 50 shows since the song was last played, as per PT, bringing the evening to a close.
