The Band guitarist Robbie Robertson performed at last night’s The Last Waltz Nashville: An All-Star Celebration Of The Band’s Historic Farewell Concert. The tribute event organized by Blackbird Presents also featured Michael McDonald, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Cyril Neville, Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price, Dave Malone, Bob Margolin and Darius Rucker, performing with a house band made up of Warren Haynes, Don Was, Lukas Nelson, John Medeski, Jamey Johnson, Terence Higgins and Mark Mullins & The Levee Horns.
Robertson discussed planning The Band’s original Thanksgiving 1976 farewell concert while speaking to the audience before introducing Harris (who contributed to the original Last Waltz film). Robertson later emerged near the end of the second set, adding guitar and vocals to “The Weight.” He stuck around as the rest of the cast of performers came out for a collaborative version of “I Shall Be Released.” Robertson was back again during the encore, joining in on the show-closing “Don’t Do It.”
Other highlights from Nashville included Emmylou Harris singing “Evangeline,” Harris and Michael McDonald singing “Helpless,” Nathaniel Rateliff singing “Caravan,” Ratliff and Jamey Johnson singing “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Lukas Nelson singing “Forever Young,” Bob Margolin (who performed at the 1976 concert) playing guitar on “Mannish Boy” and Margo Price singing “Tears Of Rage” a cappella.
