The Allman Betts Band Covers Tom Petty & Dire Straits In Norfolk

The Allman Betts Band featuring Devon Allman and Duane Betts along with bassist Berry Oakley Jr., guitarist Johnny Stachela, drummers/percussionists John Lum and R. Scott Bryan and keyboardist John Ginty recently embarked on their inaugural tour. On Tuesday, the group made a stop at The NorVa in Norfolk, Virginia that included Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Dire Straits covers in the setlist.

So far, The Allman Betts Band have been presenting a mix of originals, covers, The Allman Brothers Band classics and songs from Devon and Duane’s solo repertoires each night. Tuesday in Norfolk started in similar fashion to other dates with “All Night” and “Melodies Are Memories” from the group’s forthcoming debut studio album, Down To The River. After Devon led the “new” ABB through “Left My Heart In Memphis” from his Royal Southern Brotherhood days, the ensemble went to the “old” ABB repertoire for “Blue Sky” and “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More.”

“Autumn Breeze” followed the Allmans’ tunes before the group treated fans to a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “You Got Lucky.” Devon Allman led The Allman Betts Band through the song from 1982’s Long After Dark, which as per Setlist.FM’s stats was a debut. The semi-acoustic portion of the night continued with a take on Gregg Allman’s “Multi-Colored Lady” ahead of electric renditions of “Jessica,” “Mahalo,” the title track from Down To The River and The Allman Brothers Band’s “Dreams.” Duane Betts then led his mates through Dire Straits’ 1985 hit “Walk Of Life.”
