Tedeschi Trucks Band began a three-night stand at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Thursday. Last night the rock and soul ensemble kicked off the run by welcoming Luther Dickinson for a pair of songs and debuted a cover of Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces.”
The multi-piece ensemble opened up their evening in the Music City with a pair of originals, delivering takes on “Don’t Let Me Slide” and “Part Of Me.” The band’s 14-song main set leaned heavily on cover selections with the first of the night following: Delaney & Bonnie’s “Coming Home.” The first surprise of the night came next as Tedeschi Trucks Band offered up their debut take on Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces.” The track originally appeared on the country music legend’s critically-acclaimed 1998 release Teatro. Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood” and The Four Tops Motown classic “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever” helped fill out the middle portion of the set.
Dickinson emerged towards the final stretch of the night. The North Mississippi Allstars’ guitarist and vocalist lent a hand on the pairing of Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery.” Tedeschi Trucks Band closed out their first night in Nashville with the two-song encore of Allman Brothers Band via Blind Willie McTell song “Statesboro Blues” and Joe Cocker’s version of “Space Captain.”
