Tedeschi Trucks Band Honors Aretha Franklin & Welcomes Ivan & Ian Neville At Lockn’

By Andy Kahn Aug 26, 2018 7:25 am PDT

Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to Arrington, Virginia on Saturday to perform at this year’s Lockn’ music festival. Frontwoman Susan Tedeschi led the collective on a tribute to Aretha Franklin to begin yesterday evening’s set and later brought out a pair of members of the New Orleans Neville musical family.

TTB selected “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You),” one of The Queen Of Soul’s earliest hits, to open Saturday’s performance. Following the tribute to Franklin, guitarist Derek Trucks and the band backed Tedeschi on “Made Up Mind.” Later, Tedeschi made her standard dedication to the parents in the audience before covering Bob Dylan’s “Lord Protect The Child.” The ensemble was without vocalist Mike Mattison, who had a prior commitment but is expected to rejoin the group at Lockn’ today.

Dumpstaphunk/Foundations Of Funk keyboardist Ivan Neville emerged to sit-in on “Bound For Glory.” One Neville was replaced by another as Ivan’s band mate, guitarist Ian Neville, came out to assist on Joe Tex’s “Show Me.” The set closed with a sequence bridging together The Allman Brothers Band’s “Little Martha,” followed by “Midnight In Harlem,” “The Storm” and The Allmans’ “Whipping Post.”
