Tedeschi Trucks Band Kicks Off 2019 Orpheum Run In Boston

The Tedeschi Trucks Band began a three-night stand at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre, their last run of the year, on Thursday night. Band leaders Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary in Tedeschi’s hometown with a show featuring the group’s usual mix of originals and choice covers.

Last night’s main set started with the pairing of “Anyhow” and “Just As Strange” from the band’s 2016 studio album, Let Me Get By. Next, vocalist Mike Mattison led the group through his own “Life Is Crazy.” The TTB then worked their recently revived cover of The Beatles’ “I’ve Got A Feeling” into their beloved rendition of “Keep On Growing” by Derek & The Dominos and followed with Elmore James’ blues chestnut “Done Somebody Wrong.” After three covers, it was back to originals for “It’s So Heavy” from 2013’s Made Up Mind and “Learn How To Love” off their debut album, 2011’s Revelator.

Susan Tedeschi took a moment before the band covered Junior Wells’ “Little By Little” to dedicate the song to Buddy Guy. Tedeschi noted she often played the song while she lived in Boston. Derek then provided a gorgeous intro and sublime solo on Revelator’s “Midnight In Harlem” before the TTB wrapped the set with covers of Little Milton’s “More & More” and Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free.” For the encore, the 12-piece capped the night with their rendition of Elton John‘s “Border Song” and the powerful original “Made Up Mind.”
