Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker Rejoins Pond On Drums For Mink Mussel Creek Cut In Austin

Kevin Parker of Tame Impala reunited with his former band, Pond, on Wednesday when he joined the group on drums at The Mohawk in Austin. Parker, who drummed with Pond from 2009 through 2011, returned for the final song of the night, Mink Mussel Creek’s “Makeout Party Girls.”

Mink Mussel Creek, which predates both groups, was an early Perth psychedelic rock band featuring Parker, Pond frontman Nick Allbrook and guitarist Shiny Joe Ryan. The three musicians revisited their shared history on “Makeout Party Girls,” which Parker played drums on.

Parker moved on from Pond to focus on Tame Impala, but the artists’ histories have remained intertwined. Allbrook and Ryan were early members of Tame Impala’s live band, while Pond’s Jay Watson (GUM) remains part of Parker’s touring outfit.

Pond opened Wednesday’s concert with a bust-out of “Whatever Happened To The Million Head Collide,” which had not been performed since 2020. The song appears on the 2013 album Hobo Rocket,” an LP Parker co-produced with Pond.

The band also played “Skyworks,” “Through The Heather” and the title track from their new album, Terrestrials. Other selections in Austin included “Paint Me Silver,” “Sweep Me Off My Feet,” “The Weather” and “Giant Tortoise.”

Parker appeared for the final song of the evening, adding drums to “Makeout Party Girls.” Watch fan-shot video below:
