King Gizzard Teases ‘Bluegrass’ Music As Billy Strings Collaboration Takes Shape

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard teased what appears to be the next development in their budding collaboration with Billy Strings: something resembling bluegrass.

Stu Mackenzie and Joey Walker discussed what’s next for King Gizzard during an appearance on Australian radio station triple j’s Mornings with Lucy Smith. Asked what fans could expect from the band, the musicians responded, “Bluegrass.”

“We’re not finished with it yet,” Mackenzie said. “And it’s probably not bluegrass really, to be honest, in the same way that Alien Metal is probably not really techno.”

“We’ve got something in the pipeline with a special young man,” Walker added in reference to Strings. “We’re excited.”

While Strings wasn’t named during the exchange, the comments come six months after King Gizzard shared footage of the guitarist working with members of the band in an Australian studio. The March video and subsquent photos from the studio offered the clearest evidence yet that a collaboration between the two acts was underway.

Mackenzie cautioned that the project might not arrive next year. “We’ve got a few projects at 70%, so we’ll see what project gets to the finish line first,” he said.

King Gizzard released their 28th studio album, Alien Metal, last month. No title, release date or other details regarding the apparent Strings collaboration have been announced.
