Taj Mahal Joins Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman In Hawaii In 1990

Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir and blues icon Taj Mahal both recently appeared at a concert in Hawaii on New Year’s Eve. Bobby and Taj shared the stage on the island that night, just as the pair of legendary performers previously collaborated in Hawaii during a Weir & Wasserman show on this date in 1990.

Bobby and his longtime cohort, late bassist Rob Wasserman, staged a concert at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center in Lihue on the island of Kauai on January 12, 1990. The two set show got underway with “Festival” and the rest of the first half featured such Bob & Rob staples as the blues standard “Walkin’ Blues,” The Beatles’ “Blackbird” and the closer “Heaven Help The Fool.”

The second set saw takes on Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” Dead favorite “Victim Or The Crime” and Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip.” Following a Wasserman bass solo and “Throwing Stones,” the duo expanded to a trio as Mahal accompanied arrangements of “Souva Serenade,” “The Four Mills Brothers,” “Young Blood” and “Everybody Is Somebody.” Bobby crooned “Misty” as the lone encore 17 years ago tonight, listen to a soundboard recording of the collaborative evening below:
