Little Feat’s surviving members recently announced they will tour next year in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the release of their landmark live album, Waiting For Columbus. This edition of Sunday Cinema revisits the legendary band’s 1977 appearance on the German television program Rockpalast, which was recorded just days before the run of shows that became the source of Waiting For Columbus.

The 70+ minutes of footage that aired on Rockpalast is the closest we’ll get to a visual version of WfC. Sadly, Little Feat co-founding guitarist Lowell George died in 1979. During his tenure, the band produced incredible tunes such as “Dixie Chicken,” “Skin It Back,” “Fat Man In The Bathtub” and “Spanish Moon,” each of which appeared on Waiting For Columbus and aired on Rockpalast.

Each member of Little Feat shows their value from Lowell’s earnest “Willin'” vocals, to Paul Barrere’s angular lead work in “Skin It Back,” to galloping rhythms pounded by the one-two attack of drummer Richie Hayward and percussionist Sam Clayton during “Fat Man,” to Kenny Gradney holding it down for “All That You Dream,” and Bill Payne’s barrelhouse piano work on “Old Folks Boogie.”
