Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead not only pushed each other to greatness on stage, they also pushed each other to hilarious heights in the rare interviews they took part in together. We saw some of the pair’s obvious chemistry in a 1979 Philadelphia TV feature we posted a few weeks ago and we’ve come across another fantastic interview from just a year later that Weir and Garcia sat for on ABC’s Good Morning America.

The Grateful Dead were celebrating their 15th anniversary in 1980 and were in the midst of a run of shows at Radio City Music Hall in NYC that featured both acoustic and electric performances. Jerry and Bobby woke up early to make it to the ABC studios on October 29, 1980 to chat with GMA’s Joan Lunden about their history and more. We love Weir’s answer on why the band’s still together and it’s a bit eerie the host asks Jerry about whether he looks forward to entering “the great beyond” or looks forward to the band staying together for another 15 years. The Grateful Dead did last exactly 15 years longer before Garcia did indeed enter “the great beyond” in 1995. There’s also a part of the feature where Deadheads weigh in on their love of the band.
