Sturgill Simpson has been keeping fans and his band on their toes since starting his Who The F**K Is Johnny Blue Skies? Tour last year. The latest surprise came Wednesday at the Minneapolis Armory, where Simpson worked a partial cover of Guns N Roses' “Welcome To The Jungle” into a performance of “The Good Look.”

Simpson promised the audience at his second of two consecutive shows in Minneapolis a rocking affair and he delivered. Sturgill and his lockstep band of guitarist Laur Joamets, keyboardist Robbie Crowell, drummer Miles Miller and bassist Kevin Black threw it down for nearly three hours.

Last night’s setlist featured 27 songs, eight of which were repeats from Sturgill’s Tuesday night show at the Armory. Simpson opened with “Brace From Impact (Live A Little)” on Wednesday and showed off material from throughout his career before wrapping with a raucous “Fastest Horse In Town.”

Simpson’s majestic take on the Nirvana classic “In Bloom” was one of several covers he played last night. Passage du Desir, an album Sturgill released in 2024 under his Johnny Blue Skies alter ego, was represented by “Scooter Blues,” “Jupiter’s Faerie,” “One For The Road” and “Right Kind Of Dream.”

The quintet revved into “A Good Look” about halfway through the concert. Simpson belted out the Sound & Fury standout before Crowell and Joamets unleashed fiery solos. Sturgill then exchanged knowing glances with his bandmates and mouthed something ahead of a breakdown. Miller hit a lick and the ensemble launched into “Welcome To The Jungle.”

Sturgill Simpson sang multiple choruses and verses of the opening track from Guns N’ Roses 1987 debut album, Appetite For Destruction and led his group through the bridge. Eventually, the group found their way back to “A Good Look” to finish the song.
