Sturgill Simpson stuck around Texas following his appearance Sunday at the Two Step Inn festival in Georgetown, to play a concert at Stubb’s in nearby Austin on Monday night. Simpson switched up the Stubb’s setlist, opening the show with his first known performance of “You Can Have The Crown” since November 2015.
“All right, I don’t know, we’ve been waiting like 10 or 11 years to do this again,” Simpson said before the start of the Stubb’s show. “The city’s always been very, very good to us. We just wanted to stick around and say ‘thank you’ and play one more show for you guys. To mark the occasion, we’re gonna play something we haven’t played in about nine years.”
Simpson and his band — bassist Kevin Black, keyboardist Robbie Crowell, guitarist Laur Joamets and drummer Miles Miller — then launched into “You Can Have The Crown.” The well-received song was recorded for Simpson’s 2013 debut solo album, High Top Mountain.

Simpson’s Who The F**k Is Johnny Blue Skies? Tour is in support of his 2024 Johnny Blue Skies album, Passage du Desir. Six songs from the album were played at Stubb’s alongside additional selections from Simpson’s catalog.
The three-hour long set also featured covers like “Party All the Time” by Eddie Murphy, “L.A. Woman” by The Doors, “Midnight Rider by The Allman Brothers Band, “Purple Rain” by Prince, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum and others.
