Scott Law & Jeff Pevar Join The String Cheese Incident For Choice Covers In Oregon

The String Cheese Incident took a spin through Oregon this past weekend. The jamgrass pioneers welcomed guitarists Scott Law in Eugene and Jeff Pevar in Jacksonville.

On Friday, SCI rolled into the Cuthbert Amphitheatre in the college town of Eugene, Oregon. The band — guitarist Billy Nershi, multi-instrumentalist Michael Kang, bassist Keith Moseley, drummer Michael Travis, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth and percussionist Jason Hann — initiated the show with the staple “Shine.”

The first frame also featured a well-jammed pairing of “Illegal” and “Desert Dawn.” The set came to a close with the recently debuted “Fête Tama.”

Set two got underway with the Nershi-penned classic “Black Clouds.” The sextet then welcomed longtime collaborator Scott Law for a rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Big River.” Law handled lead vocals, threw down some serious twang on the tune and swapped riffs with both Kang and Billy.

Cheese then went it alone for a nearly 19-minute “The Big Reveal.” The second set came to a close with “All We Got.” Law returned to lay down the law on a cover of the Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia’s “Deal” to cap the show at Cuthbert.

Saturday saw SCI moving to Southern Oregon for a concert at Britt Pavilion in Jacksonville. That show began with “Lonesome Fiddle Blues,” composed by fiddle legend Vassar Clements.

The first set also saw a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me” alongside Cheese favorites such as “Jellyfish” and “Carnival.” SCI reeled off “Rain,” “Star” and “Rivertrance” to begin set two. Following “Look at Where We Are,” Pevar emerged for a take on John Coltrane’s “Impressions,” which the collab explore thoroughly for the better part of 18 minutes.

The second frame came to a close with a pair of favorites in “Joyful Sound” and “Colorado Bluebird Sky.” Jeff Pevar returned to help out on the encore, “Let’s Go Outside.”
