The String Cheese Incident Honor Chuck Berry & Unearth Miles Davis Cover In St. Louis: Full Show Audio
On Saturday, The String Cheese Incident closed out a two-night stand at The Fabulous Fox Theater in St. Louis. The jamgrass act honored Rock & Roll icon and local legend Chuck Berry by debuting a cover of “You Can Never Tell” along with busting out Mile Davis’ “All Blues” for the first time since 2004.
The jamband stalwarts looked to their ode to their home state “Colorado Bluebird Sky” to get their evening going at the historic venue. Bassist Keith Moseley stepped up to sing lead on “Get Tight,” which would help kick off the band’s first seamless run of the night. The String Cheese Incident would reach for Miles Davis’ “All Blues” next, delivering the song for the first time in 14+ years. The Kind Of Blue cut had sat untouched since October 16, 2004. Talking Heads deep cut “(Nothing But) Flowers” closed out the stretch.
The second surprise of the night followed as the band offered up their inaugural take on Berry’s “You Can Never Tell.” The tune originally appeared on the St. Louis native’s 1964 LP St. Louis To Liverpool. The final 45-minutes of the frame were dedicated to an expansive takes “Best Feeling,” “The Big Reveal” and “Beautiful.”
The String Cheese Incident tapped “Into The Blue” to open up their second stanza, delivering the tune that was debuted this past New Year’s Eve for just the second time. The six-piece paired a pair of “Outside” songs next with “Let’s Go Outside” and “Outside And Inside.” Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me” was dusted off for first time since July of last year. The Wildflowers selection was serve up for just just fifth time ever. A jam-heavy run on the trifecta of “Back Home,” “Rivertrance” and “Rollover” put an emphatic punctuation point on the set. “Rosie” served as the lone encore last night at the Fox Theater.
