Steely Dan Busts Out Two Classics At Beacon Theatre
By Scott Bernstein Oct 19, 2016 • 2:03 pm PDT
On Tuesday night jazz-rock act Steely Dan played the fourth of ten shows that make up this year’s Beacon Theatre residency in New York City. The theme of the night was a complete performance of the band’s 1977 iconic album Aja and all told the show featured two songs the Dan hadn’t played yet in 2016.
Steely Dan co-founders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker took the stage as the rest of their talented backing band covered “November Afternoon” by Donald Byrd and Booker Little. The ensemble then launched into “Black Cow,” the opening track from Aja. While most of the tunes on the seven-song LP are in regular rotation, there were a few rarities involved. “Deacon Blues” saw action for just the fourth time this year, “Home At Last” appeared for the ninth time in 2016 and “I Got The News” was performed for the first time since October 13, 2015. “I Got The News” has only been played five times since the band’s 2013 Beacon residency.
The Dan followed up the complete performance of Aja by focusing on their most beloved material including “Bodhisattva,” “Hey Nineteen,” “Dirty Work,” “Kid Charlemagne,” “My Old School” and “Reelin’ In The Years.” One big surprise was the inclusion of Katy Lied classic “Everyone’s Gone To The Movies,” which hadn’t seen action since August 29, 2014. Steely Dan said farewell with a “Pretzel Logic” encore as Becker and Fagen left the stage to the tones of the theme from The Untouchables.
