Spafford hit El Club in Detroit on Saturday, where the jam quartet presented a house version of Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island.” The band delivered the revamped cover of the track off the jazz legend’s 1964 album, Empyrean Isles, as the encore of their concert in Motown.
“We have been playing the song for many years and decided to put a different spin on it as we explore the possibilities of blending genres in our own unique way,” guitarist Brian Moss said of the “Cantaloupe Island” performance.

Spafford’s show in Detroit got underway with a seamless first set bookended by relatively new tune “Diesel Driver” and the band’s cover of Demi Lovato’s “Anyone.” Heralding things to come in the retooled “Cantaloupe Island,” Spaff also uncorked alternate versions of originals “Giants in the Light” and “Ginger Stardust” in the second frame, lacing the songs with an electronic vibe full of breakbeats and high-octane transitions.
