Soul Asylum stopped by the KEXP studios in October to perform a session for the Seattle-based listener-supported radio station. The alt-rock band’s set featured three of their most well-known songs along with a pair of cuts from their new album Slowly But Surely.
Soul Asylum — frontman/guitarist Dave Pirner, guitarist Ryan Smith, bassist Jeremy Tappero and drummer Jerry Pentecost — visited KEXP while touring in support of Slowly But Surely. The 12-track album, the band’s 13th studio LP, was produced by The Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan and arrived in September.

The Minneapolis-based band kicked off their Live On KEXP set with “Somebody To Shove” off their triple-platinum 1992 album Grave Dancers Union. Soul Asylum then turned to Slowly But Surely for “Freak Accident” and “High Road.”
The quartet concluded by returning to Grave Dancers Union for hits “Black Gold” and “Runaway Train.” The latter earned Soul Asylum the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1994.
