Smashing Pumpkins Perform ‘Brady Bunch’s’ ‘Sunshine Day’ With Barry Williams

The Smashing Pumpkins turned their Chicago Lollapalooza aftershow Wednesday into an evening of unexpected collaborations, welcoming The Brady Bunch star Barry Williams for a performance of “It’s A Sunshine Day” from the iconic 1970’s television series before reuniting with former bassist Melissa Auf der Maur.

The Windy City band readied for their Friday night performance at Lollapalooza proper in Chicago’s Grant Park with a 24-song concert at the Riviera Theatre. Frontman Billy Corgan and company began honoring the 30th anniversary of their Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album by loading the setlist with 10 of its tracks, including the opening combo of “1979” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” as well as the first performance of the record’s “Thirty-Three” since 2018.

Barry Williams, the actor best known for portraying Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch, came out after the 16th song of the evening to sing the Pumpkins’ debut of “It’s A Sunshine Day.” The band and its guest were also joined by backing vocalists on the song written by Steve McCarthy for inclusion on 1972’s The Kids From The Brady Bunch. Williams and his castmates also performed the song during the 1973 Brady Bunch episode “Amateur Nite.”

Williams recently appeared on the Pumpkins frontman’s The Magnificient Others With Billy Corgan podcast. The 80-minute interview was filmed in May at the iconic Brady Bunch house in Southern California. The pair discussed why the show continues to resonate over 50 years later, Williams coming to terms with forever being known as Greg Brady, the actor’s work with Bob Fosse on Pippin and many other topics.

“It’s A Sunshine Day” was followed a few songs later by the live debut of “War Dreams Of Itself,” a song featured on the latest Smashing Pumpkins album, 2024’s Aghori Mhori Mei. Next up was the first performance of Monuments To An Elegy standout “Dorian” since 2015.

The Smashing Pumpkins brought out Melissa Auf der Maur for the evening’s “The Everlasting Gaze” finale. Auf der Maur toured with the band in 2000, the same year the band released Machina/The Machines Of God, the album that yielded “The Everlasting Gaze.”

After the Pumpkins’ Lollapalooza appearance, which will be featured as part of a Hulu livestream of the festival, the band will embark on The Rats In A Cage Tour 2026 celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The trek begins on October 30 in Columbus and continues through November.
