Billy Corgan made a surprise appearance during Sombr’s set last weekend at Coachella. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman, who had never played Coachella before, joined Sombr on a performance of “1979.”

The unexpected collaboration took place in the middle of Sombr’s set at the Outdoor Theater stage. The performance also featured the live debut of “Potential,” a new song expected to be officially released this Friday.

“Coachella, is it cool if I bring some fucking rock royalty on the stage right now?” Sombr paused to ask the audience. “Coachella, I want you to make the most noise for this person, it’s their first time ever appearing at Coachella. Coachella, please make some fucking noise for Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins!”

With guitar in hand, Corgan emerged and hugged Sombr while starting to play “1979,” the song from The Smashing Pumpkins’ landmark 1995 album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The 59-year-old Corgan and the 20-year-old Sombr jointly handled lead vocals on “1979.”

Sombr returns to Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California, on Saturday for the second weekend of Coachella 2026. Watch Billy Corgan make his Coachella debut from weekend one below:
