The Shady Horns Among Vulfpeck Guests In New Orleans

Michigan-birthed funk act Vulfpeck continued a brief April tour on Wednesday night with their second of two performances at Tipitina’s in New Orleans. The band was joined by a number of guests throughout the night including Lettuce’s The Shady Horns section of Eric “Benny” Bloom and Ryan Zoidis.

As Live For Live Music reports, the core Vulfpeck lineup was also augmented by trombonist Melissa Gardiner and frequent collaborators guitarist Cory Wong, multi-instrumentalist Joey Dosik and vocalist Antwaun Stanley. The band filled the stage early on for “Outro” and then fittingly showcased Wong on “Cory Wong.” Later, Dosik and Zoidis shined on “Daddy He Got A Tesla,” which featured fierce bass work from Joe Dart.

Stanley emerged for a lengthy segment in the middle of the set that started with “1 For 1, DiMaggio” off 2016’s The Beautiful Game. The portion of the show featuring Antwaun rolled on with a “1612” aided by The Shady Horns and Gardiner, “Aunt Leslie” with the trombonist and Joey Dosik on saxophone as well as a horn-driven “Funky Duck” and cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman.” Stanley also led “Wait For The Moment” and added to a “Back Pocket” that started a capella style.

Vulfpeck cleared the stage for “Beastly” and eventually left Dart out for an intense bass solo. The group closed out the set with fan-favorite “Christmas In L.A.” and The Beautiful Game’s “Dean Town.” Zoidis and Bloom came out for the encore with Vulfpeck to cover Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You.” Wednesday’s encore also included covers of Rufus & Chaka Khan’s “Tell Me Something Good,” Al Green’s “Love & Happiness” and Steely Dan’s “Peg” as well as an “It Gets Funkier” finale.
