Showdown Kids featuring guitarists Scott Metzger and Simon Kafka and violinist Katie Jacoby were among the acts who performed at Freaks Ball XX on Saturday night at The Bell House in Brooklyn. The 20th annual concert put on by and celebrating the taste-making New York City e-mail list the Freaks List saw Showdown Kids fit a pair of Phish covers into their set.
The trio put their own spin on a number of songs including Jimmie Rivers’ “Jammin’ With Jimmy,” The Beatles’ “When I’m Sixty-Four,” Bob Nolan’s “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” Thelonious Monk’s “Well You Needn’t and Billy May’s “Green Hornet.” Jacoby led a cover of “Stash” by Phish in the middle of the set. Later, Leftover Salmon keyboardist Erik Deutsch played melodica on Showdown Kids’ “Lawn Boy,” the title track from Phish’s 1990 studio album. Deutsch was on hand with Joe Russo‘s Hawaiii, who made their live debut, as part of the event.
