Following a performance at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco, Sam Grisman Project hopped coasts for a show at The Hamilton in Washington D.C. to kick off the group’s fall tour. The string band welcomed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gina Sobel to help them close the first set.
Sobel joined SGP six songs into the first set beginning with the Jimmy Cliff classic, “Sitting Here in Limbo.” Gina jumped into the tune with a jubilant flute solo as the band stretched the song to nearly 11 minutes. Sobel also added flute to “Red Rocking Chair” and “Moonshiner” to seal the set.

Sam Grisman Project — who celebrate the music of Sam’s father David Grisman as well as his longtime collaborator Jerry Garcia — got the second set underway with Garcia and Grisman’s signature song together, “Grateful Dawg,” followed by the Grateful Dead classic “Friend of the Devil.”
Set two also saw the band debuting the traditional “Raleigh and Spencer” alongside covers of Levon Helm‘s “Anna Lee,” Bob Dylan‘s “Buckets of Rain,” John Hartford‘s “Tall Buildings” and a set-closing rendition of Randy Newman‘s “Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man).”
SGP returned to encore with a timely version of ‘s “All You Fascists Bound to Lose.” The band concluded the concert with the Grateful Dead-covered traditional “Peggy-O.”
