The 20th Annual Andy Kim Christmas Show series hosted by the Canadian singer-songwriter kicked off last night at Toronto’s Massey Hall. Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson was part of the all-star lineup and sat in with fellow Canadian rockers Barenaked Ladies and Broken Social Scene.
Wednesday’s event featured additional performances by Andy Kim — who the hit songs “Baby, I Love You” and “Rock Me Gently” among others — as well as Billy Talent, Dan Hill, Men Without Hats, Molly Johnson, Jake Clemons, Roch Voisine and others. Proceeds from the concert supported the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Gifts of Light initiative. Kim will host additional all-star holiday concerts in his native Montreal on Saturday, December 7 and in Calgary on Friday, December 13.
Lifeson came out during Barenaked Ladies’ set and added guitar to a medley that strung together Christmas classics “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town,” “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Deck The Halls,” and Rush’s “2112.” The medley was performed in the style of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.” Lifeson also assisted a cover of José Feliciano’s holiday favorite “Feliz Navidad.”
Broken Social Scene enlisted Lifeson for a performance of Andy Kim’s “Sister Ok” led by the evening’s host. Lifeson remained onstage with BSS for “Anthems for a Seventeen Year‐Old Girl.”
